The breathtaking landscape surrounding Göreme was formed from solidified lava streams, ash, and tuff stone, all dating back to the Neocene period. Deep valleys, carved by heavy erosion over millennia, criss-cross this remarkable terrain, creating a dramatic, otherworldly setting. This unique "lunar" landscape is defined by extensive geological formations and the highly distinctive morphological features of Cappadocia. Thousands of years of continuous erosion have sculpted the tuff deposits into an array of extraordinary pyramids and cone-shaped structures, making this area truly one of nature's masterpieces.

Kaymaklı Underground City, built beneath the hill known as the Citadel of Kaymaklı, opened to the public in 1964. The residents of Kaymaklı (formerly known as Enegup in Greek) constructed their homes around nearly 100 tunnels leading into the underground city. Today, locals still use some of the most accessible parts of these tunnels as cellars, storage areas, and stables, accessible through their courtyards. The underground city is known for its low, narrow, and sloping passages. While the city spans 8 floors below the surface, only 4 of these levels are currently open to visitors, where the spaces are designed around essential ventilation shafts.

Ihlara Valley is a stunning, verdant canyon carved by the Melendiz River, offering visitors a peaceful escape into nature. Known for its towering cliffs and hidden rock-cut churches, the valley stretches for 14 kilometers and is a haven for hiking enthusiasts. As you explore the scenic trails, you'll discover ancient cave dwellings and frescoed chapels, reflecting Cappadocia’s rich Christian heritage.

Selime Monastery is an impressive rock-cut complex carved into towering cliffs, offering a fascinating glimpse into Cappadocia's ancient monastic life. As one of the largest monasteries in the region, it features interconnected chambers, chapels, and a cathedral, all adorned with intricate frescoes. The monastery's unique architecture and stunning views of the surrounding landscape make it a must-visit site for history and culture enthusiasts.

Pigeon Valley is famous for the thousands of pigeon houses carved into its rock formations. The landscape here feels almost surreal, resembling something out of a Salvador Dalí painting, with its strikingly conical formations. These unique structures were formed by volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago. Over time, wind, rain, and other natural forces eroded the volcanic rock, creating tufa, a soft and easily carved stone. Many of these conical formations, also known as fairy chimneys, house caves and intricate labyrinths, adding to the valley's mystical charm.
