The breathtaking landscape surrounding Göreme was formed from solidified lava streams, ash, and tuff stone, all dating back to the Neocene period. Deep valleys, carved by heavy erosion over millennia, criss-cross this remarkable terrain, creating a dramatic, otherworldly setting. This unique "lunar" landscape is defined by extensive geological formations and the highly distinctive morphological features of Cappadocia. Thousands of years of continuous erosion have sculpted the tuff deposits into an array of extraordinary pyramids and cone-shaped structures, making this area truly one of nature's masterpieces.

Uchisar is a fascinating troglodyte village located 4 km east of Göreme, renowned for its massive rock formation that once served as a fortification. This extraordinary rock tower, the highest peak in the region, provides a stunning panoramic view of all of Cappadocia, with Mount Erciyes visible in the distance. Inside the castle, most rooms are interconnected by stairs, tunnels, and passages. At the entrances of many rooms, millstone doors—similar to those found in underground settlements—were used to control access. Unfortunately, due to erosion, not all rooms are accessible today. However, many rooms on the northern side of the castle are still in use as pigeon houses (dovecotes). Farmers utilize these pigeon houses to collect pigeon droppings, which serve as an excellent natural fertilizer for orchards and vineyards.

Kaymaklı Underground City, built beneath the hill known as the Citadel of Kaymaklı, opened to the public in 1964. The residents of Kaymaklı (formerly known as Enegup in Greek) constructed their homes around nearly 100 tunnels leading into the underground city. Today, locals still use some of the most accessible parts of these tunnels as cellars, storage areas, and stables, accessible through their courtyards. The underground city is known for its low, narrow, and sloping passages. While the city spans 8 floors below the surface, only 4 of these levels are currently open to visitors, where the spaces are designed around essential ventilation shafts.

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is Cappadocia’s most famous attraction, and for good reason. This fascinating complex of medieval cave churches, carved out by Orthodox monks, showcases the region's rich religious history. The museum features more than 10 cave churches, along with rectories, dwellings, and a religious school, all forming a large monastic complex within a striking, ring-shaped rock formation. The surreal landscape of Cappadocia adds to the awe-inspiring experience. To explore the Göreme cave churches, follow the clearly marked path, which winds counterclockwise through the site. Each church has been given a modern Turkish name by local villages, typically based on a prominent feature.

Paşabağ is known for its remarkable earth pillars, also called fairy chimneys, which rise dramatically in the middle of a vineyard—hence the name, which translates to "The Pasha's Vineyard." In Turkish, "Pasha" refers to a high-ranking military officer, and it’s a commonly used nickname. The site is also known as Monks Valley, a name derived from the isolated tuff cones that were once carved into hermit dwellings. Today, you can still see the vineyard and the striking tuff cones standing alongside the road, creating a surreal and captivating landscape.

Pigeon Valley is famous for the thousands of pigeon houses carved into its rock formations. The landscape here feels almost surreal, resembling something out of a Salvador Dalí painting, with its strikingly conical formations. These unique structures were formed by volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago. Over time, wind, rain, and other natural forces eroded the volcanic rock, creating tufa, a soft and easily carved stone. Many of these conical formations, also known as fairy chimneys, house caves and intricate labyrinths, adding to the valley's mystical charm.

Avanos is a charming town located in the heart of Cappadocia, renowned for its centuries-old pottery-making tradition. During the tour, we will visit one of the local pottery workshops where you can watch a live pottery demonstration. You'll also have the opportunity to try your hand at pottery making and experience the craft for yourself.

Also known as Imaginary Valley or Pink Valley, Devrent Valley stands out from the other valleys of Cappadocia as it lacks cave churches. So, what makes it so famous? The answer lies in its surreal, lunar-like landscape. Devrent Valley is home to a variety of unique rock formations, with small fairy chimneys creating a distinctive moonscape. What truly captivates visitors are the animal-shaped rocks scattered throughout the valley. Some of the most recognizable shapes include a camel, snake, seals, and even a dolphin.
